Here are some of the practices and technologies we have adopted to make our operations more efficient and sustainable.
Auto Steer
Auto steering is the automated control of a farm vehicle using GPS information. Auto steer both significantly improves the accuracy of each pass a farmer makes with his equipment while cutting operator fatigue and stress.
GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms)
The adoption of GMO crops is one of the most valuable advances in the history of agriculture – benefiting consumers, farmers and the environment. The benefits of GMOs include increasing yields so that more food is produced on less land and with less fuel and other inputs; mitigating the effects of weeds, insects and disease; lessening the need for tillage which can harm soil and cause erosion; and perhaps most importantly, making safe, nutritious food more and affordable.
Precision Agriculture
The practice of gathering and acting on real time data, allowing quick decisions to fine tune inputs and other variables on an acre by acre basis. Precision agriculture also refers to the range of GPS-based technologies and practices that include auto steer, variable rate technology and application, crop scouting and monitoring inputs and yields.
Sectional Control
Technology that shuts off the seeding mechanism according to factors identified on a field map. Sectional shut enables more efficient use of inputs by avoiding double planting at end rows, point rows and around terraces. It also speeds up planting by making it unnecessary to slow down to raise or lower the planter at end rows. It also prevents over-application of chemicals while consistently applying inputs at the right rate in the right spots.
Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Satellite Navigation
RTK is the most accurate form of GPS navigation and auto steer for farm equipment. With an RTK system a reference station monitors GPS signals and provides real-time corrections to equipment. RTK delivers accuracy to within a single centimeter.
Variable Rate Application (VRA)
Applying seed and crop inputs according to the exact qualities and requirements of each portion of a field. Variable Rate Application can be map based (using GPS) or sensor based. Our preferred practice is to grid sample the land and then apply inputs (including all main nutrients) at the recommended rate for the yield goal of each acre. VRA maximizes the efficient use of inputs while minimizing waste and environmental impact.
